Frequent Questions

What is an RCD?

An RCD or Residual Current Device commonly referred to as a safety switch, or earth leakage detector detects and disconnects electrical faults preventing a human or animal from receiving an electric shock. An RCD achieves this by monitoring the current flowing through the earthing system. Any current flowing through the earthing system is earth leakage current. Current will only ever flow through the earthing system during unsafe fault conditions. The earthing system consists of all conductive metal surfaces that are accessible during normal operation. Some examples include the outside of your oven, cooktop, water taps, pool fence and stainless benchtops. If an RCD detects earth leakage, in most cases above 30mA, the device will isolate the faulty circuit.

What is a circuit breaker?

A circuit breaker is a device that protects fixed wiring, i.e. wiring in the walls, from overload and short circuit faults. Un-managed overload and short circuit faults will cause the cables to overheat, melt and catch fire.

What is the difference between an RCD and a circuit breaker?

An RCD protects humans and animals from electric shock. A circuit breaker prevents fixed wiring from overheating and catching fire. The presence of a test button can distinguish an RCD. Some devices incorporate both an RCD and a circuit breaker in a single apparatus.
